About the position

The Fire Captain position with the State of Nevada involves managing, supervising, and participating in wildland fire suppression, prevention, and education. The role requires ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations while overseeing the performance of assigned staff and maintaining operational readiness of equipment. The Fire Captain will work closely with various stakeholders to achieve the agency's mission and must maintain specific firefighting qualifications throughout their employment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise wildland fire suppression and prevention activities.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff.
  • Assign and review work tasks for team members.
  • Initiate disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with agency and national training qualifications.
  • Evaluate situations and request necessary resources for firefighting operations.
  • Inspect, test, and ensure proper operation of all assigned firefighting equipment.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports related to fire operations.
  • Collaborate with state, federal, and local cooperators, as well as landowners.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in fire science or a closely related field and three years of firefighting experience; OR
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of firefighting experience; OR
  • One year as a Firefighter II in Nevada State service; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
  • Must be qualified as a NWCG Firefighter 1 (FFT1 or higher) and NWCG Single Resource Boss at the time of application.
  • Must pass a work capacity test at an arduous level prior to appointment.
