About the position

The Fire Emergency Communications Specialist I/II/III position involves specialized work in emergency communications, where employees are responsible for receiving, screening, and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls related to fire, emergency medical services, and aircraft emergencies. This role requires providing medical advice and preparing various reports, all performed under general supervision in accordance with departmental procedures. Employees must exercise initiative and independent judgment to respond appropriately under very stressful conditions. The work is reviewed through direct observation, audits of recordings, and supervisory meetings to ensure compliance with policies and established standards. Additionally, employees may be required to work additional hours with little to no notice based on operational needs, and the work schedule will vary and rotate throughout the first year of employment, including midnights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and screen emergency and non-emergency calls for fire and medical services.
  • Dispatch appropriate emergency response units based on the nature of the call.
  • Provide medical advice to callers as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain various reports related to emergency communications.
  • Exercise independent judgment in high-stress situations to ensure proper response to emergencies.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures during all communications activities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate for Fire Emergency Communications Specialist I.
  • Six months of clerical experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience for ECS I.
  • One year of experience as a fully functional emergency communications specialist for ECS II.
  • Valid Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification for ECS II and III.
  • Two years of experience as ECS I and/or ECS II for ECS III.
  • Satisfactory completion of job-related proficiency tests and background checks, including polygraph examinations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience in emergency communications is desired.
  • Typing speed of at least 25 CWPM.
