About the position

The Fire Fighter position at the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is responsible for performing essential fire suppression, prevention, and management activities. This role involves working in various outdoor environments, operating fire and rescue equipment, and participating in interagency firefighting efforts. The position is critical for maintaining public safety and requires physical endurance and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Operates all types of fire operation and rescue equipment including portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, aerial ladder equipment and emergency medical equipment.
  • Preserves evidence at fire scenes.
  • Performs search and rescue of individuals in hazardous environments including collapsed buildings, auto accidents, hazardous material spills and confined spaces.
  • Deploys on fire assignments.
  • Performs wildfire suppression including cutting fire lines, using engines and hand tools to suppress fires.
  • Performs wildfire mitigation of trees, brush or dead and downed woody material that including thinning, removing, chipping, pruning, limbing, felling, and bucking.
  • Maintains accurate vehicle maintenance record books.
  • Maintains accurate Crew Time Reports (CTR) daily as requested by supervisor.
  • Performs general facility maintenance.
  • Participates in interagency assignments outside of El Paso County.
  • Supports the Sheriff's Office strategic plan.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of employment.
  • Knowledge of mitigation tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of working with wildland fire equipment and tools including pumps, power saws, aircraft, radios, and hand tools.
  • Capable of performing strenuous outdoor work safely and productively.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with the public.
  • Ability to operate a manual transmission vehicle.
  • Successfully complete "Arduous" Work Capacity Test (pack test, 3 miles 45lbs pack in 45 minutes).
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with government employees, contractors, fire protection districts and the public.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum one or more seasons as a Fire Fighter 2 (FFT2).
  • Current National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) certification including S-130 and S-190 training required prior to date of hire; S-131, S-212, S-260, and S-290 trainings preferred.
  • NWCG Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) preferred.
  • NWCG Engine Boss (ENGB) preferred.
  • Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License or Colorado State IFSAC Driver Operator Pumper preferred.
  • Advanced First Aid and CPR certifications preferred.
