About the position

This position supports the developed tactical goals and objectives of the Amarillo Fire Department as directed by the Mechanic Supervisor II in a manner that achieves maximum results. Under general supervision, this position performs various types of maintenance and repair of Amarillo Fire Department vehicles, in accordance with applicable specifications, schedules and standards. This position determines needed repairs and/or replacements for Amarillo Fire Department vehicles; ensures the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; and provides written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Supports and develops maintenance of equipment and apparatus, as well as the budgetary process and expenditures associated with equipment and apparatus.
  • Supports functions of Mechanic Supervisor II to achieve the goals and objectives of the Department as assigned by the Chief of the department.
  • Administers the safety functions as assigned by the Chief of the department.
  • Develops and maintains procedures and guidelines as directed by the Mechanic Supervisor II in assigned areas.
  • Supports the written rules, procedures, and guidelines of the department.
  • Troubleshoots, analyzes and repairs all fire equipment and apparatus under possible adverse conditions.
  • Maintains records of all services and repairs.
  • Practices safety, good housekeeping and preventive maintenance in all work.
  • Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions to determine needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Performs state inspections of transportation equipment, to ensure its safe operating condition.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment to insure its safe operating condition.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Trains other employees as necessary.
  • Transports various items for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
  • Performs general housekeeping of the shop area on a daily basis.
  • Oversees inventory and property management.
  • Facilitates purchases up to $1,000 without supervisor approval.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of years of experience in Auto Mechanics, Diesel Mechanics, or servicing vehicles and up to 5 years as a line mechanic.
  • Valid Texas CDL Driver's License Required.
  • Required to acquire and maintain the following licenses and certifications within 90 days of employment: Texas Class-A CDL with X endorsement, Texas State Vehicle Inspection License, and Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) System Certification.
  • Required to acquire and maintain the following licenses and certifications within 3 years of employment: ASE Master Certification and Emergency Vehicle Technician Level -2 Certification.
  • Must live within 30 minutes of the Amarillo City limits.
  • Must be available for rotating on-call, 24-hour emergency call out procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Welding experience preferred.
