About the position

The Fire Safety Officer at Dartmouth College is responsible for administering the Fire Prevention Programs, which include education, training, inspections, drills, and consulting. This role collaborates with various stakeholders to foster a proactive fire safety culture on campus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a College Fire Safety Plan.
  • Respond to fire emergencies on campus.
  • Conduct fire code and compliance inspections and analyze findings.
  • Conduct fire and emergency drills for all college-owned facilities and maintain records.
  • Manage the College's Hot Work Program.
  • Partner with EHS Research Safety Officers for laboratory fire inspections.
  • Create and maintain building emergency action plans in collaboration with the Emergency Manager.
  • Conduct fire-related tabletop exercises with the Office of Emergency Management.
  • Represent EHS during the annual bonfire event.
  • Assist with managing a comprehensive Fire Door Safety Program in coordination with the FOM Fire Systems Maintenance Shop.
  • Advise on fire safety improvements and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with the Hanover Fire Department and the Hanover Code Compliance Officer.
  • Assist with first-year student orientation activities related to fire safety.
  • Coordinate live burn demonstrations during first-year orientation.
  • Provide fire risk assessments for student clubs and assist with fire-related training.
  • Provide fire extinguisher training to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Coordinate fire prevention educational programs for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Conduct fire and life safety education sessions for Fraternities and Sororities.
  • Manage EHS response to fire safety investigations and complaints.
  • Keep accurate records and manage files and databases.
  • Manage an up-to-date library of NFPA codes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Safety, Engineering, Fire Protection, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of fire safety experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of applicable NFPA standards.
  • Valid US driver's license and ability to qualify as an Approved Driver under Dartmouth College policy.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience in a higher education setting, research facility, or hospital.
  • Experience with fire protection and life safety systems.
  • In-depth knowledge and implementation of applicable NFPA standards.
