About The Position

The Fire Department of the City of San Luis Obispo is seeking a dedicated and skilled Fire Vehicle Mechanic to join their team on a limited-term basis, anticipated to last through June 2025. This position is crucial for ensuring the operational readiness and safety of specialized fire vehicles, heavy fire apparatus, and other emergency and non-emergency vehicles. The Fire Vehicle Mechanic will perform responsible preventative maintenance and mechanical repair work, ensuring that all fire vehicles and related mechanical equipment are maintained to the highest standards. In this role, the mechanic will be responsible for determining preventative maintenance needs, conducting necessary repairs, and checking the operating efficiency of fire vehicles and heavy apparatus. The position requires a thorough understanding of various mechanical systems, including engines, transmissions, brake systems, hydraulic systems, and water pumps. The mechanic will also be tasked with ensuring that all fire apparatus conforms to the Department of Transportation and National Fire Protection Association (N.F.P.A.) standards. The Fire Vehicle Mechanic will work under the general direction of the Supervising Fire Vehicle Mechanic and will provide guidance to the Mechanic Helper. This role involves responding to emergency callouts, performing field repairs, and assisting with the management of the Fire Department's fleet of emergency response apparatus. Additionally, the mechanic will participate in training and development activities to maintain and enhance their skills and certifications, ensuring they remain up-to-date with the latest industry standards and practices.
