About the position

The City of Sandy Springs Fire Department is hiring certified firefighter/AEMT and firefighter/Paramedics for full time positions working a 24/48 hour shift. The Sandy Springs Fire Department is a small, busy department with five stations comprised of 8 companies (2 aerials, one tower ladder, one heavy squad, and four engines). We are staffed with full time firefighter/EMTS and firefighter paramedics. Our three shifts are organized within a traditional rank structure with a Battalion Chief overseeing the work of Captains, Lieutenants, Fire Apparatus Engineers, and Firefighters. Responsibilities

  • Conduct fire department emergency and non-emergency activities during an assigned shift.
  • Engage in emergency scene activities including basic firefighting and emergency medical care.
  • Direct and perform a variety of staff support functions.
  • Drive designated fire apparatus and emergency vehicles to transport personnel and equipment to/from incident scenes.
  • Respond to emergency calls involving fires, hazardous materials, and vehicle accidents; evaluate scene upon arrival.
  • Control fire situations including suppression, extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, search and rescue, salvage, and overhaul.
  • Select and operate fire service tools and equipment including fire hoses, nozzles, and appliances.
  • Locate water sources, lay and connect hoses, and operate fire extinguishers.
  • Identify dangerous building conditions and mitigate hazardous materials incidents.
  • Provide emergency medical care as an EMT-I/A, including basic first aid and CPR.
  • Perform various types of rescue operations as assigned.
  • Assist with emergencies involving public transportation and high-rise buildings.
  • Implement emergency techniques when trapped or disoriented; assist fellow firefighters and guide new recruits.
  • Monitor and communicate effectively over radio channels.
  • Prepare, decontaminate, inspect, and maintain fire equipment and vehicles.
  • Prepare pre-fire plans and check fire hydrants for proper function.
  • Establish and maintain good working relations with the public; promote fire safety and prevention.
  • Attend shift meetings, seminars, drills, and training sessions as required.
  • Complete and prepare various forms, logs, and reports associated with daily responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain Georgia Fire Standards and Training Council (GFSTC) Firefighter certification AND National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Firefighter 1 certification.
  • Must possess and maintain Georgia and/or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic license.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or a GED Certification.
  • Must possess a valid US Driver's License, must possess a GA Driver's License at time of employment.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Have not been convicted of a felony in the past 10 years.
  • Must successfully complete all steps in the hiring process including passing a physical fitness assessment, an extensive background investigation, post-offer polygraph examination, psychological and medical evaluations, and drug screen.
