Firefighter (Paramedic)

About the position

The Firefighter (Paramedic) serves in the Fire Section of the Public Safety Service at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center. This role involves responding to emergencies, performing firefighting duties, and providing advanced life support and basic life support care. The incumbent is responsible for operating firefighting equipment, maintaining fire department vehicles, and ensuring the safety of patients and staff during emergencies. The position requires a commitment to ongoing training and certification in firefighting and paramedic skills.

Responsibilities

• Respond to all Medical Center emergencies and perform firefighting duties.
• Drive and operate fire engines and other emergency vehicles to the scene of emergencies.
• Perform checks, tests, and maintenance on fire department vehicles and equipment.
• Administer appropriate emergency treatments and provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Basic Life Support (BLS) care.
• Manage medical emergencies related to respiratory, cardiac, and trauma-related incidents.
• Document patient care reports and other fire-related documents.
• Operate as a member of hazardous materials response and confined space rescue teams.
• Assist in training new Medical Center firefighters.

Requirements

• Current National Registry or State of Michigan Paramedic level certification upon hire.
• Certification as Firefighter II according to VHA Directive 7718 upon hire.
• Certification as Pumper Driver/Operator upon hire.
• Ability to obtain Fire Inspector II certification within 24 months of employment.
• Valid state driver's license.

Nice-to-haves
