About the position

The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) is currently accepting applications for the position of Firefighter Trainee. This role is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and develop the skills necessary to perform firefighting duties effectively. Under close supervision, trainees will engage in a comprehensive training program at the OCFA departmental academy, where they will learn to suppress various types of fires, including structural, aircraft, and wildland fires. Additionally, trainees will be involved in routine fire prevention activities and other essential duties as required. Successful completion of the academy and satisfactory evaluations will lead to appointment as a firefighter. The recruitment process for this position includes several key events, starting with the application deadline on September 30, 2024. Following this, candidates will undergo a series of assessments, including the Biddle Physical Agility Test, oral interviews, and a Chief's interview. The entire selection process is designed to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are selected for the academy, which is scheduled to begin on July 25, 2025. Candidates must meet specific minimum qualifications, including age, education, and possession of relevant licenses and certifications. The OCFA is committed to maintaining high standards in its recruitment process, ensuring that all candidates are thoroughly evaluated before being offered a position.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to perform firefighting duties used in the suppression of structural, aircraft, wildland, and other types of fires.
  • Participate in routine fire prevention activities.
  • Attend the OCFA departmental academy to develop and demonstrate minimum qualifications for entry into a career as a firefighter.
  • Complete all required training and evaluations during the academy.
  • Prepare for and participate in various assessments, including physical agility tests and interviews.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Possession of a valid Class C Driver License or out of state equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid, current California or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License.
  • A valid, current California Paramedic License or National Registry Paramedic License will be accepted in lieu of a valid California or National Registry EMT License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a valid, current California or National Registry Paramedic License.
  • Completion of a California State certified Firefighter I Academy.
  • Possession of a California State Fire Marshal Fire Fighter I Certificate.
  • Bilingual speaking skills (English and one of the following languages: Spanish, Farsi, Chinese/Mandarin/Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, Urdu, Hindi, Tagalog or American Sign Language).

Benefits

  • Salary during academy: $5,815.33 per month.
  • Salary after academy graduation: $6,581.13 per month plus additional EMT pay.
  • Scheduled salary increases of 2.75% on March 21, 2025, and March 20, 2026.
  • Potential for additional bonus pay after academy graduation.
