About the position

The Firefighter position in Sterling, CO, is a full-time role responsible for responding to medical emergencies, controlling and extinguishing fires, and engaging in search and rescue operations. The firefighter will maintain equipment and facilities, participate in training, and perform various tasks to ensure readiness for emergencies. This role requires adherence to safety protocols and effective communication with the public and team members.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire emergency calls and perform tasks including search, rescue, ventilation, or suppression.
  • Use department equipment to extinguish fires in various environments.
  • Respond to emergency medical care calls and treat individuals according to guidelines.
  • Drive and operate department vehicles to the scene of incidents.
  • Perform daily equipment tests and maintenance to ensure readiness for emergencies.
  • Conduct routine equipment maintenance and recommend modifications as needed.
  • Participate in pre-planning fire tactics to improve service and rescue operations.
  • Attend training classes to maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills.
  • Check hydrants and test water flows regularly, maintaining records of hydrant locations.
  • Perform station maintenance and cleaning tasks as required.
  • Make public presentations and assist in training classes for staff and community groups.
  • Use computers to enter data and generate reports, maintaining necessary records.
  • Participate in off-duty rotation call-back for standby and fire calls.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned by the Fire Chief.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Current valid National Registry and/or State of Colorado EMT/Intermediate/Paramedic certification.
  • Valid Colorado driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Minimum age of 21 years at the time of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in operating heavy trucks or in the fire service is preferred.
