About the position

The City of El Mirage Fire Department is seeking dedicated individuals to join their team as Firefighters. This role involves responding to emergency calls, performing firefighting and rescue operations, and providing emergency medical assistance. Firefighters will also participate in training activities, maintain fire station equipment, and engage in community education regarding fire safety and prevention.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to fire, emergency medical, and rescue calls.
  • Performs firefighting activities including firefighting, rescue, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul.
  • Operates various equipment and apparatus at fire scenes.
  • Locates water supply; lays and operates hoses; monitors the pressure on hoses and nozzles.
  • Calculates friction loss and establishes fire stream; raises and climbs ladders.
  • Utilizes equipment such as axes, pike poles, forcible entry tools, rotary blade and chain saws, extrication tools, and smoke ejectors.
  • Performs life rescue activities by entering, searching for, and removing persons from hazardous situations.
  • Provides basic life support; if qualified, advanced life support to patients, including CPR and monitoring of vital signs.
  • Communicates with hospitals to provide emergency care.
  • Controls transfer of patients to medical facilities.
  • Participates in training activities to maintain/improve fire suppression/emergency medical skills and physical condition.
  • Writes incident reports for fire, EMS, and other emergency calls.
  • Answers two-way radio and telephone calls and maintains appropriate logs.
  • Provides instruction on first aid, CPR or fire prevention to the general public, as assigned.
  • Conducts fire station tours.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains apparatus, equipment, and station daily.
  • Conducts building inspections for fire hazards.
  • Makes presentations to school and civic groups to explain fire prevention practices and techniques.
  • Conducts classes on CPR, fire prevention, fire safety and related topics.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of streets, hydrant locations by touring existing and new developments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • State of Arizona Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and CPR certification or State of Arizona Paramedic Certification, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and CPR certifications.
  • Candidate Physical Abilities Testing (CPAT) certification within the past 6 months of the date of application.
  • Firefighter I/II Certification from a Regional, State, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (ProBoard) certifications for Firefighter Level I & II meeting NFPA 1001 standard.
  • Hazardous Materials-Operations certification meeting NFPA 1072 standard.
