The Racine Fire Department, established in 1843, is one of the oldest fire departments in Wisconsin and is known for its rich history and tradition. As one of the busiest fire departments in the state, it is dedicated to providing first-rate services to the citizens of Racine from its six fire stations. The department operates with 136 authorized sworn firefighter positions and a total staff of 141, aiming to protect and serve over 80,000 residents. Racine firefighters are committed to delivering high-quality, courteous, and responsive service through comprehensive strategies and training. This includes fire suppression, emergency medical care, community risk reduction, hazardous material response, technical rescue, semi-annual building inspections, and fire investigations. The department and its employees play a critical role in ensuring the long-term health and safety of the community and its visitors. The position of Firefighter is under the direction of the Company Officer or higher-ranking fire personnel. Firefighters are responsible for protecting the community from both non-emergency and emergency situations. This includes community risk reduction, firefighting, emergency medical services, technical rescue, and hazardous materials response. Firefighters must also maintain physical facilities and equipment in a state of readiness. This highly skilled and technical position requires extensive training and education to maintain and enhance knowledge, skills, and abilities in accordance with department Standard Operating Procedures and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1001) Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.
