About the position

The Firewatch position at Colonna's Shipyard is essential for supporting shipyard operations in Norfolk, VA. The role involves ensuring safety during hot work operations by inspecting equipment, maintaining communication with workers, and monitoring the workspace for hazards. The Firewatch is responsible for immediate fire suppression and maintaining a safe working environment, while also assisting with general labor tasks when not engaged in hot work.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure readiness daily.
  • Maintain all certifications and permissible badges as indicated.
  • Inspect fire suppression equipment (Water Can) and ensure operational readiness daily.
  • Observe workspace and identify any hazardous conditions.
  • Initiate and ensure open communication (Verbal/Visual) with all workers in workspaces.
  • Locate assigned space for hot work and perform assessment of area for all hazards.
  • Remove and/or cover all combustibles as applicable.
  • Verify and initial all applicable Firewatch 'FW' sections of hot work tickets.
  • Post and maintain Hot Work Notice within immediate area.
  • Maintain workspace to be free of combustible materials and debris.
  • Maintain clear view and open access to immediate hot work area.
  • Perform regular surveillance of area for potential radiant heat or fire spread.
  • Remain standing and at the ready throughout all periods of hot work and cool down.
  • In the event of incipient stage fire, immediately extinguish and stop all hot work.
  • Alert any applicable workers if evacuation required for immediate workspace.
  • Alert Supervisor or applicable member with radio if unable to suppress incipient stage fire.
  • Establish and maintain good housekeeping in workspaces while not engaged in active hot work.
  • Stop all hot work if unsafe practice is applicable.
  • Assist other workers with general labor tasks when not engaged in active hot work.
  • Perform housekeeping and general labor tasks with yard to assist production.

Requirements

  • Must have successfully completed Firewatch training.
  • Must be able to board ships.
  • Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and overtime, as required.
  • Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces with limited visibility.
  • Must have strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to stand in one place for extended time periods.
  • Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs and/or ladders of varying heights.
  • Must be able to work outdoors under all weather conditions.
  • Must be physically and medically qualified to wear the required personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate with all types of personnel.
  • Must be able to comply with all Safety rules.
  • Must have good attendance.
