The First Cook position at Geisinger in Danville, Pennsylvania, is a full-time role within the GMC Food Services Team, requiring a rotation schedule that includes weekends and holidays. The primary responsibility of the First Cook is to prepare food for patients, employees, visitors, and special functions while overseeing the activities of all cooks in the kitchen. This role demands a strong commitment to customer service, ensuring that all food preparation meets professional and appropriate service standards. The First Cook will follow system-wide standards as well as department-specific service standards, ensuring that all food is prepared using standardized recipes and methods. In this position, the First Cook will be responsible for preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods, managing the food bank, and performing various kitchen duties as assigned. The role includes ensuring that all food production is properly wrapped, dated, and labeled, and that food production schedules are adhered to. The First Cook will document food preparation and usage according to established standards and will communicate any quality issues to leadership. A critical aspect of this role is to ensure compliance with HACCP standards at all times, conducting daily monitoring and maintaining checklists for assigned cooks. The First Cook will also be responsible for estimating food requirements, controlling serving portions, and minimizing waste by preparing foods in small batches. This position involves standardizing and developing new recipes, instructing and overseeing cooks, and filling in for the Supervisor as needed. The First Cook will make menu changes in consultation with leadership and complete all required in-services according to established standards. The work environment is typically an office setting, and the First Cook is accountable for satisfying all job-specific obligations while complying with all organizational policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods using standardized recipes and methods of preparation.
  • Oversees the activities of all cooks while preparing food themselves.
  • Maintains a customer service approach at all times when fulfilling responsibilities.
  • Ensures a professional and appropriate service standard while performing the job.
  • Follows food production schedules and documents preparation and usage of food according to established standards.
  • Informs leadership about quality issues and responds positively to customer needs.
  • Ensures that HACCP standards are followed at all times.
  • Monitors food preparation to ensure foods are prepared in small batches to minimize waste.
  • Estimates food requirements and controls serving portions according to yield specified in standardized recipes.
  • Standardizes and develops new recipes, instructing and overseeing cooks as required.
  • Fills in for Supervisor as needed and makes menu changes in consultation with leadership.
  • Completes all required in-services according to established standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience required.
