The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Coach position at Champlain Valley School District is a part-time role focused on guiding students in grades 4-8 through the exciting world of robotics and STEM education. The coach will work with students to foster their interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on learning experiences. The FLL program emphasizes real-world problem-solving, where students will engage in building and programming LEGO robots to navigate challenges while also conducting research projects to address relevant issues in their communities. The coaching role is designed to inspire students, helping them to build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and learn the importance of teamwork and innovation. The FLL season runs from September until the end of January, culminating in the Vermont State Competition on January 28th, 2023. Coaches are expected to dedicate an average of 5 hours per week, which includes 2 afternoons of coaching sessions and additional preparation time. The role requires a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, particularly for students who have been historically marginalized in the fields of computer science and robotics. Coaches will work closely with other adult volunteers and mentors to create a supportive learning atmosphere that encourages exploration and creativity. Coaches will also be responsible for administrative tasks such as tournament registration and communication with families, ensuring that all team members understand the guidelines and rules of the FLL program. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for working with children, a background in robotics or STEM education, and the ability to inspire and motivate young learners. The position is compensated according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the starting date is immediate, with applications accepted until the position is filled.
