About The Position

The Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 position involves conducting field surveys for regional herpetofauna, including species such as tiger salamanders and mud turtles. The role requires handling and identifying wildlife, collecting environmental data, and assisting with various wildlife programs. This is a part-time, temporary position with a focus on fieldwork in diverse and potentially challenging environments.

Requirements

  • Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in relevant fields such as fisheries, marine resources, or wildlife management.
  • Valid driver's license or ability to meet transportation needs.
  • Ability to negotiate difficult terrain and work in remote areas.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys for regional herpetofauna, including tiger salamanders and mud turtles.
  • Handle and identify wildlife species.
  • Collect physical measurements of individual animals.
  • Attach radio transmitters and track individuals using radio telemetry.
  • Collect weather and other environmental data.
  • Collect and process water samples for eDNA analysis.
  • Record data and maintain field equipment.
  • Operate a motor vehicle for fieldwork.
  • Assist other wildlife programs with additional field surveys.
