About the position

The Fish Biologist position at the Makah National Fish Hatchery in Neah Bay, WA, is responsible for overseeing fish culture and propagation programs, ensuring compliance with hatchery policies, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance aquatic species management. The role involves both administrative and operational duties, including budget planning, data collection, and research activities to support fish propagation and distribution efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Leader in establishing hatchery policy and preparing necessary reports.
  • Coordinate with Tribal, State, and Federal entities regarding fish-stocking programs.
  • Identify information and technology gaps in aquatic stock propagation.
  • Oversee daily operations of fish culture and propagation programs.
  • Monitor and manage water quality and feeding requirements for fish.
  • Provide biological expertise for successful fish propagation and distribution programs.
  • Evaluate hatchery production programs in collaboration with fisheries offices.
  • Work with Makah tribal government to implement fish propagation and watershed management programs.
  • Assist in planning budgets and forecasting resource expenditures for the hatchery.
  • Manage fish production programs including care, treatment, and spawning of broodstock.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or National status required.
  • Degree in biological science with specific coursework in aquatic subjects and animal sciences.
  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-9 level for GS-11 applicants.
  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level for GS-12 applicants.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in hatchery data collection and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of fishery management operations and animal husbandry practices.
  • Ability to lead and train staff in fish culture activities.
