About the position

The Fish Hatchery Technician position at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources involves providing technical assistance in the production of trout for statewide stocking at the Spire Valley Hatchery. The role includes participating in fish culture and stocking, maintaining facilities and equipment, and conducting tours for visitors to educate them about hatchery operations. The position requires working outdoors in varying conditions, including wading in cold water and performing maintenance tasks year-round.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in fish culture and fish stocking activities.
  • Maintain facilities, equipment, and grounds at the hatchery.
  • Provide guided tours to hatchery visitors to inform them about operations.
  • Ensure the upkeep of hatchery tanks and ponds filled with water.
  • Perform basic maintenance on power tools and small engine equipment.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree or equivalent in natural resources management or closely related study.
  • Working knowledge of raising and stocking salmonids in intensive management systems.
  • Basic understanding of aquaculture-based water chemistry and wastewater management.
  • Experience in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and metal working applications.
  • Proficient use of power tools and equipment such as power saws and pressure washers.
  • Experience maintaining power tools and small engine equipment.
  • Nuisance animal control experience including animal ID and trapping.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment like mid-size tractors and UTVs.
  • Computer skills including knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office for administrative tasks.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively on teams and communicate with the public.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, or Natural Resources Management.
  • One or more years of experience in fish hatchery operations and aquaculture techniques.
  • Experience in fish health management and wastewater management.
  • Completion of USFWS short courses in fish health and coldwater fish culture.
  • Extensive experience in facility and grounds maintenance.
