About The Position

The Fisheries Biologist position involves managing fisheries and aquatic resources within the Lake Superior Management Unit. The role includes planning and implementing fisheries management plans, conducting aquatic surveys, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance and protect aquatic habitats. The position also requires oversight of fisheries management programs and providing technical expertise in fisheries biology.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in fisheries biology, fisheries management, aquatic biology, or zoology.
  • For Fisheries Biologist 10: One year of professional experience equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist 9.
  • For Fisheries Biologist P11: Two years of professional experience equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist, including one year equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist 10.
  • For Fisheries Biologist 12: Three years of professional experience equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist, including one year equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist P11.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Experience with statistical analysis software such as R or SAS.
  • Experience in public communication regarding fisheries issues.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Unit Manager in managing fisheries and aquatic resources.
  • Plan, promote, and implement fisheries management plans.
  • Conduct aquatic surveys and report findings.
  • Perform environmental permit reviews.
  • Participate in fish production and fisheries management operations.
  • Coordinate with other personnel and agencies for habitat protection and restoration activities.
  • Act as the primary author for river assessment reports.
  • Develop watershed assessments and resource management plans.
