About the position

The Fisheries & Wildlife Biologist III position at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission involves leading a team in managing wildlife and habitat on the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area. The role focuses on land management activities, including prescribed burning and invasive plant control, while ensuring the implementation of effective projects aligned with the management plan. The successful candidate will supervise staff, manage budgets, conduct wildlife surveys, and promote recreational use of the area.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of Wildlife and Habitat Management Section staff on the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area.
  • Conduct land management activities including prescribed burning and nonnative plant control.
  • Identify, plan, and implement effective projects consistent with the 10-year Management Plan.
  • Develop and implement annual budgets and work plans.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment and infrastructure.
  • Oversee and participate in hydrologic and vegetative restoration projects.
  • Prepare for and conduct wildlife surveys.
  • Support and conduct public hunts on the WMA and Stormwater Treatment Areas as needed.
  • Develop and promote non-hunting recreational use.
  • Maintain land management and wildlife survey databases using ArcGIS.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a physical or life science or equivalent experience.
  • 4 years of direct experience in wildlife management or related field.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of Florida ecosystems and natural processes.
  • Applied knowledge of habitat management and restoration principles.
  • Ability to collect and analyze biological data.
  • Ability to track spending and monitor budgets.
  • Proficiency with Windows applications and ArcGIS.
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 2 years of experience in habitat and/or wildlife management.
  • Florida Prescribed Burn Manager certification.
  • Strong familiarity with native and nonnative vegetation in South Florida.
  • Experience with habitat restoration work and wildlife surveys.
