About the position

The position is an apprenticeship role at Austal USA, focusing on training to become a skilled Journey person and A-Class Trades person within four years. The role involves a combination of on-the-job learning and classroom instruction, with a commitment to mastering various aspects of Fitout trades, including interior and exterior fitout, HVAC installation, and safe working practices.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill responsibilities as stated in the DOL Apprenticeship Program.
  • Complete 4 years of training, including 6000 hours of on-the-job learning and a minimum of 576 hours of classroom instruction.
  • Maintain a minimum 70% passing rate in training.
  • Commit to learning all aspects of Fitout trades, including fabrication and installation of furniture and components.
  • Practice safe working habits when using power tools and machinery.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as directed by the supervisor or instructor.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Relevant work experience in a physically demanding environment or completion of a relevant skilled trade training program preferred.
  • Demonstrate motivation to continuously improve knowledge and skills.
  • Integrity to complete all assigned academic work independently.
  • High degree of reliability in task accomplishment and timekeeping.
  • Ability to measure using Metric and English systems.
  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology preferred.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated applied math skills equivalent to ACT WorkKeys Level 3.
  • Working knowledge of power tools and machinery.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology such as general ship structure and vessel layout.
