About the position

The Fleet Deckhand position at American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) involves ensuring the safe and efficient operation of vessels while maintaining a work-life balance with a schedule of 14 days on and 7 days off. The role is crucial for the loading and unloading of cargo, performing vessel maintenance, and contributing to a positive team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the safe loading and unloading of cargo.
  • Inspect, correct, or notify others of any conditions affecting safety.
  • Handle rigging during barge tow building, locking, and docking activities.
  • Assist with loading or unloading materials and supplies to and from docks, barges, and boats.
  • Examine cables, wires, and lines to ensure they are fit for use.
  • Use tools to tighten or loosen cables and lines as needed.
  • Effectively handle tow wires and cables to secure barges safely.
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance such as painting, cleaning, and changing oil and filters.
  • Exhibit integrity, mutual care, personal responsibility, agility, customer focus, and teamwork.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment as an active crew member.

Requirements

  • Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous tasks.
  • Ability to carry an 80lb wire for 200 feet without stopping or losing balance.
  • Must obtain required Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather, both heat and cold.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of navigation and safety procedures.
  • Positive attitude and adaptability to a unique work schedule.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must complete Health Questionnaire and pass physical abilities test.
  • No current pending criminal charges or probation status.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Adhere to all ACBL policies, USCG, and environmental regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous deckhand experience on inland rivers is a plus but not required.
  • Six months of consecutive work experience preferred.
