About the position

The Fleet Maintenance Technician position at the City of Omaha involves skilled maintenance, service, and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including light, medium, and heavy trucks, construction vehicles, fire apparatus, and small engine equipment. The technician will be responsible for overhauling and repairing engines, transmissions, and various systems such as heating, cooling, and air brakes. They will operate automotive diagnostic equipment, perform inspections, and maintain hydraulic systems. The role also includes performing minor welding and body repairs, fabricating parts when necessary, and conducting scheduled preventive maintenance on a range of vehicles and equipment. The technician will be expected to maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance, update computerized management systems, and ensure the organization and cleanliness of the work area. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repair methods, as well as the ability to operate computers and diagnostic tools. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, are essential, along with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. The position requires physical stamina, including the ability to climb ladders and perform heavy manual labor in confined spaces. The technician will also be responsible for driving and operating a tow truck for recovering disabled vehicles in the field. Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled maintenance, service, and repairs on light, medium, and heavy trucks, construction vehicles, fire apparatus, and small engine equipment.
  • Overhaul and repair gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and various systems including heating, cooling, and air brakes.
  • Operate automotive diagnostic equipment and perform required testing and inspections in accordance with regulations and standards.
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic systems, including routing and replacing hydraulic lines and checking for leaks.
  • Inspect and diagnose tire problems, including repairing, mounting, and balancing tires following industry standards.
  • Perform minor welding and body repairs, including installing or replacing decals and routine welding work.
  • Fabricate parts when replacement parts are unavailable.
  • Perform road calls and emergency starts to vehicles, providing maintenance and minor repairs in the field.
  • Drive and operate the tow truck to recover disabled vehicles or equipment in the field.
  • Determine and perform scheduled and preventive maintenance and repairs on various vehicles and equipment.
  • Review and determine required repair and maintenance needs, creating work orders outlining information for repair work.
  • Update and maintain maintenance systems, preparing logs, reports, and work orders using computerized management systems.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, diagnose, and provide required repairs, including for minor electrical and engine issues.
  • Research and locate specialized parts, tools, and equipment, providing estimates of resources required for repairs.
  • Assist with field maintenance and repairs as required.
  • Maintain organization, safety, and cleanliness of the work area and related equipment and tools.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of experience as an automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanic, including experience with gasoline, diesel, and electrically powered equipment.
  • Possession of a forklift operator's permit by the end of the probationary period.
  • Possession of a Second Grade Hoisting and Engineer's Certificate by the end of the probationary period.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle A/C license under section 609 of the Clean Air Act by an EPA approved program by the end of the probationary period.
  • Possession of specified tools as required by the City, which will be inspected and approved by a shop supervisor.
