Under the supervision of the Fleet Manager and Senior Fleet Technician, performs skilled level mechanical work including diagnosis and repair of two (2) and four (4) cycle single to multi-cylinder gasoline & diesel engines, carburetion and fuel injection systems, air and liquid cooling systems, starting and charging systems, braking, steering suspension, electrical & electronic systems 134a HVAC systems, automatic and manual transmissions and trans-axles. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS * Performs maintenance and repair to carburetion and fuel injection systems. * Performs maintenance and repair to City equipment and City fleet vehicles. * Performs skilled diagnosis. * Performs maintenance and repair of Computerized Engine Controls on both compression ignition and spark ignition engines. * Performs maintenance and repair of automatic and manual transmissions and hypoid differentials. * Performs maintenance and repair of hydraulic and air braking systems * Performs maintenance and repair of HVAC systems, 134 a refrigerants. * Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared or undeclared emergency. * Performs other related job duties as assigned.   * Knowledge of the principles of mechanics, safe repair practices, diagnostic methods, materials, tools and instruments utilized in the mechanical trade. * Knowledge of operating and repair characteristics of vehicles and equipment use in service within the City. * Skill in diagnostics of the proper use of mechanical tools, instruments, automotive diagnostic scan tools, multi meters, software and time management, * Skill in the use of a variety of computer programs, including Microsoft Office and various other office equipment. * Skill in the use and repair of small/light, medium, and/or heavy/complex equipment, including power tools, vehicles, commercial mowers, HVAC systems, construction equipment, and telecommunications. * Ability to read and interpret shop manuals, schematics and flow-charts. * Ability to write clearly and maintain orderly, accurate work orders. * Ability to work outside under adverse weather conditions. High school diploma or GED certificate with minimum five (5) years-documented experience in the field; medium to heavy Truck Technician experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.     Special Qualifications: Must possess a valid state of Florida Class "B" CDL driver's license or must obtain a Class "B" CDL driver license temporary permit issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles within 45 days of employment and successful licensure within 120 days of obtaining temporary permit. Must currently be ASE Certified in a minimum of six (6) areas of certification including A7 and/or T7 Heating and Air Conditioning, A6 and/or T6 Electrical/Electronic, A4 and/or T4 Brakes, A5 and/or T5 Steering and Suspension, A8 Engine Performance and/or T8 Preventive Maintenance Inspection. The work is generally heavy and may require exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force rarely, and in excess of 25 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:   * Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, and slippery surfaces. * Climbing: Ability to frequently ascend / descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. * Crawling: Ability to frequently move about on hands and knees or hands and feet. * Crouching: Ability to frequently bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine. * Feeling: Ability to perceive attributes of objects by touch. * Dexterity: Primarily with fingers, as in picking, pinching, or typing. * Grasping: Applying pressure with the whole hand. * Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. * Hearing: Ability to hear and understand at normal speaking levels with or without correction. * Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. * Lifting: Ability to lift and move objects. * Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions. * Pulling / Pushing: Ability to occasionally move objects up to 100 pounds. * Reaching: Ability to frequently extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. * Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers. * Speaking / Talking: Ability to communicate clearly, accurately and concisely through speech. * Standing: Ability to stand for sustained periods of time. * Stooping: Ability to frequently bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. * Visual Acuity: Ability to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading, operating motor vehicles; including color, depth perception, and field vision. * Walking: Ability to walk long distances to perform tasks and to move from one job site to another. * The majority of position duties are required to be performed on-site. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires the ability to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.  Additionally work may be performed in both in and out-of-door environments with exposure to the wind, rain, cold, heat and cramped spaces.
