About the position

As a Flight Test Engineer 2 at Garmin, you will play a crucial role in the development and execution of flight test programs. Your primary responsibilities will include drafting ground and flight test plans and reports for moderately complex test programs, which are derived from previous programs. You will coordinate and execute these flight tests as part of a flight test crew, taking on the role of test director when necessary. This position requires you to define, document, and maintain the configurations of moderately complex test aircraft and equipment, while also coordinating with engineering teams to ensure all aspects of the test are covered. In addition to planning and executing tests, you will operate flight test tools, conduct real-time data analysis, and post-process flight test data. Identifying root causes of issues that arise during flight tests and verifying their resolution will be a key part of your responsibilities. You will also prepare installation data for avionics systems in test aircraft and leverage your understanding of the certification process and associated regulations to perform your role effectively. Your contributions will not only focus on technical execution but also on process improvement and safety within the flight test organization. You will be expected to provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem-solving techniques, demonstrating a sense of urgency and commitment to developing timely solutions. Additionally, you will serve as a mentor to less experienced flight test engineers, helping to foster their growth and development in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Drafts ground/flight test plans and reports for moderately complex test programs derived from previous programs
  • Coordinates and executes moderately complex flight tests as part of a flight test crew, including acting as test director
  • Defines, documents, and maintains moderately complex test aircraft and equipment configurations, and coordinates with engineering teams
  • Operates flight test tools, conducts real-time data analysis, and post-processes flight test data
  • Identifies root cause and verifies that issues identified during flight test are resolved
  • Prepares moderately complex avionics system installation data for test aircraft
  • Leverages basic understanding of certification process and associated regulations in performance of role
  • Offers suggestions to improve processes and the safety of the flight test organization
  • Provides reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem-solving techniques
  • Serves as a mentor to less experienced flight test engineers (Flight Test Engineer 1)

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Computer Engineering AND a minimum of 1 year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Demonstrates proficient use of engineering and flight test tools
  • Demonstrates basic understanding of certification processes and associated regulations
  • Demonstrates strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must demonstrate the capability to perform advanced troubleshooting skills on moderately complex avionics installations

Nice-to-haves

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Previous experience using general aviation products
  • Pilot or aircraft maintenance certification
  • Experience with revision control tools, mobile application development, audio/video recording tools, or database tools
