About the position

The Flight Test Engineer position at NAVAIR involves supporting the design and execution of test programs to evaluate the performance of Navy systems and weapon systems. The role requires collaboration in test planning, data analysis, and risk assessment to ensure the safety and effectiveness of testing operations.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design of test programs to assess the performance of NAVY systems and weapon system concepts.
  • Produce test plans in accordance with NAVAIR test planning instructions.
  • Develop test methods for evaluating performance and design test scenarios to yield valid and measurable quantitative test results.
  • Review system level documentation to provide changes and recommendations.
  • Participate at test planning and system development meetings.
  • Assess safety hazards and provide risk mitigation inputs in testing, including Test Hazard Assessments.
  • Apply Mission Based Test and Evaluation (MBT&E), Capabilities Based Test and Evaluation (CBT&E), System of Systems thinking and Design of Experiments (DOE) concepts to guide planning, test execution, data collection and analysis.
  • Coordinate and schedule necessary test asset and range resources.
  • Design data analysis processes to assess the performance of Navy weapons or systems over development cycles.
  • Define and coordinate data collection requirements.
  • Develop test support, instrumentation, and data recording requirements to facilitate collection of critical flight test data.
  • Support the real-time execution of Navy weapons or systems test, assessing, and providing recommendations to engineering issues.
  • Develop data analysis tools to streamline and automate data analysis, processing, and reporting.
  • Utilize scripting languages to manipulate and draw conclusions from large data sets.
  • Analyze test data (real-time and post-mission) to improve understanding of test results, draw conclusions and assess specific mission results.
  • Conduct pre- and post-test briefings.
  • Provide input for system performance in official Navy Test and Evaluation (T&E) reports.

Requirements

  • US Citizenship Required
  • Minimum SECRET Security Clearance
  • Experience in test program design and execution
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting
  • Familiarity with Mission Based Test and Evaluation (MBT&E) and Capabilities Based Test and Evaluation (CBT&E) concepts
  • Ability to utilize scripting languages for data manipulation

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) concepts
  • Knowledge of Navy systems and weapon systems
  • Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies
