About the position

The Floral Clerk at Tom Thumb is responsible for providing exceptional customer service while ensuring the quality and freshness of floral products. This role requires a strong commitment to customer satisfaction, as the clerk will engage with customers to make product suggestions and assist with special orders. The clerk will also be involved in the design and preparation of floral arrangements, ensuring that all products meet company standards. The position demands a working knowledge of the floral department's functions, including inventory management, product freshness, and seasonal merchandising requirements. The clerk will be expected to maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to all safety and sanitation procedures. Additionally, the role involves operating various equipment and tools necessary for floral preparation and display, as well as performing receiving duties and managing product inventory. The Floral Clerk must also comply with company policies and guidelines, ensuring proper pricing and signage for all products.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with an emphasis on providing fast and friendly Customer Service.
  • Assists customers by making product suggestions.
  • Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques via telephone, in-store intercom and one-on-one customer interaction.
  • Answers and responds to incoming calls appropriately.
  • Receives and appropriately resolves customer complaints and reports to Store Director as needed.
  • Takes special orders from customers by telephone or in person.
  • May assist with ordering balloons, helium tanks, plants, flowers, accessories and supplies as needed.
  • Ensures product freshness and selection.
  • Monitors and responds to special occasion merchandising requirements, sales trends, ads or seasonal promotions, and customer feedback.
  • Upgrades plants, makes bows, inflates balloons and prepares bouquets.
  • Prepares floral designs to Company standards.
  • Ability to follow and maintain department standards and requirements such as floral upgrades, balloon upgrades and candy arrangements.
  • Understands opening and closing department procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Company policies and guidelines as outlined in the Albertsons/Tom Thumb Employee Handbook.
  • Responsible for insuring proper code dating for all products within the department are being enforced.
  • May assist with physical inventory taken every 4 weeks.
  • Controls shrink and cost.
  • Implements correct product preparation techniques.
  • Uses and operates related equipment such as pallet jack, hand truck, scissors, knives, safety cutters, stem cutters, chopper, wire, hot glue guns, spray paint, heat sealing machines and helium tanks.
  • Performs receiving duties including; breaking down loads, verifying orders using invoices, inspecting quality, reporting shortages, stocking and rotating product.
  • Adheres to product temperature and storage guidelines and follows proper packaging techniques.
  • Properly conditions and handles all indoor and outdoor plants, shrubs and flowers.
  • Follows proper processing procedures for all cut flowers.
  • Complies with all workplace safety rules and regulations.
  • Ensures proper pricing and signage.
  • Ensures safety, cleanliness and sanitation of work area, cooler, equipment and display area, including code date compliance as required.
  • Implements emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions.
  • Complies with company grooming standards and dress code.
  • Responsible for performing all job duties and responsibilities safely, accurately and with honesty and integrity.

Requirements

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic knowledge of perishability and seasonality of products.
  • Proper product conditioning and handling knowledge.
  • Safety and sanitation procedures knowledge.
  • Good understanding of overall company practices and Floral Department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to frequently reach, lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 40 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Mental alertness to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and weights and measures.
  • Knowledge of product variety, standards, perishability, product handling, sanitation, labeling and department policies and procedures.
