About the position

The Mainframe Senior Engineer position is part of a managed services engineering team responsible for maintaining customer environments and efficiently solving technical problems. This role involves maintaining existing Mainframe systems, planning and migrating customer systems, ensuring proper handling of system backups, and addressing technical issues that affect system operability. Candidates should have prior experience in Mainframe administration and support, particularly with z Series systems and related technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform reporting functions as required or requested by customer.
  • Support cases and incidents/problems not solvable by Ops.
  • Installation, maintenance, and configuration of ISV products.
  • Assist with hardware configuration and upgrades.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team migrating customer environments with minimal impact.
  • Write and maintain system documentation.
  • Work with customers to accomplish their migration to FNTS or remote management setup.
  • Implement technologies to achieve team roadmap goals, such as developing new offerings through new hardware capabilities or additional OS capabilities.
  • Install new software (OS & major subsystem) releases while coordinating with customers on timing/testing/implementation.
  • Maintain golden/sandbox systems for templates.
  • Participate in technical infrastructure projects as the Mainframe SME.
  • Provide occasional after hours and weekend support.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience as a Mainframe Systems Engineer.
  • Strong knowledge of z/OS concepts (JES2, SDSF, TSO, RACF, HCD/IODF, SMP/E).
  • Familiarity with communication concepts (VTAM, TCP/IP).
  • Experience with storage management (SMS, HSM, DFDSS, VSAM, IDCAMS, ICF Catalogs).
  • Knowledge of z/OS subsystems (JES2, WLM, OMVS/USS, SMF/RMF, RACF, ASM, GRS).
  • Experience with major subsystems (CICS, IMS, DB2, MQ Series).
  • Experience supporting z/VM and z/VSE systems is a plus.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and presentations).
  • Experience configuring LPARs using the Hardware Management Console.
  • Experience with storage management in JBOD, RAID, and SAN environments.
  • Experience defining and troubleshooting printer configurations.
  • Experience configuring TCP/IP and associated servers in an IPV4 environment (IPv6 desired).
  • Familiarity with physical and virtual tape library configuration and implementation.
  • Experience with OS upgrades, PTF deployment, and software installation.
  • Experience configuring and deploying automation and monitoring tools.
