About the position

The Food Defense, Safety, and Compliance Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining all systems related to Food Quality, Safety, and Compliance. This role focuses on continuous improvement in food defense, safety, and compliance, while participating in establishing and implementing goals and objectives. The manager serves as a resource in all aspects of managing operations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct risk assessments and develop and implement mitigation strategies for identified risks.
  • Responsible for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) activities and documentation.
  • Establish new policies and improve current policies around quality management and food safety.
  • Set standards and provide oversight of the Recall Program.
  • Develop training materials and standard procedures for all job roles associated with food defense, safety, and compliance.
  • Train staff and outside parties on food safety standards and food defense protocol.
  • Respond to all inquiries and complaints related to food safety, quality, and compliance in a timely and professional manner.
  • Arrange for preventative maintenance and repairs on all warehouse equipment, facilities, freezers, and cooler, consulting with the Director of Distribution and Logistics regarding equipment maintenance provided by outside vendors.
  • Ensure that warehouse sanitation is carried out by staff and volunteers on a regular basis, reporting sanitation and safety concerns to the Director of Distribution and Logistics in a timely manner.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of the Clean Room, adhering to the highest standards of sanitation and cleanliness in accordance with USDA and Feeding America standards.
  • Develop policies and procedures in collaboration with the Executive Director on safety programs pertaining to inclement weather, natural disasters, and personal safety.
  • Create and perform scheduled facility, process, procedural, and documentation audits.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local warehousing, material handling, and shipping requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Provide audit coordination for AIB, Feeding America, USDA, and other facility audits.
  • Responsible for periodic quality checks and facility inspections to ensure audit readiness.
  • Create and manage food bank cleaning program, including warehouse and office spaces.
  • Establish quality standards for all food received, handled, stored, and distributed.
  • Maintain all documentation and certifications pertaining to food safety, food defense, and compliance.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of proven work experience in a distribution or retail environment, preferably in the food industry, or a combination of education and experience that will provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience.
  • Must have strong database management skills.
  • Must have a working knowledge of inventory, data processing, and distribution center procedures.
  • Must have the ability to solve complex problems and deal with a variety of situations where minimal standardization exists.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work under deadlines; show initiative and flexibility.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, i.e. Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Nice-to-haves

  • ServSafe Manager and Food Defense Certification (training provided) or equivalent food safety manager level certification from an accredited institution.
  • 1-3 years of distribution center experience in the food service distribution industry; food safety experience.
  • Microsoft SharePoint and Inventory Management database experience.
