About the position

The Food Scientist Intern position at Roskam Foods offers a unique opportunity for students pursuing a degree in Food Science or related fields to gain hands-on experience in food manufacturing. The intern will work closely with the Research & Development team, contributing to the development and optimization of food products while ensuring compliance with industry standards. This role is designed to provide practical exposure to various aspects of food product development, testing, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support the R&D team in developing and reformulating food products from concept to commercialization.
  • Conduct various analyses and tests to ensure product quality, safety, and consistency, including sensory, texture, and chemical analyses.
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of experiments, maintaining clean, organized, and well-equipped laboratory and pilot plant spaces.
  • Collaborate with Food Scientists to support production line trials, ensuring smooth execution and data collection.
  • Support research into new ingredients, technologies, and manufacturing processes, including sourcing samples and developing relationships with suppliers.
  • Assist in documenting processes, formulas, and test results according to regulatory requirements and company standards.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Operations, and Supply Chain teams to ensure smooth product transitions from development to full-scale production.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of food science principles, food safety, and quality assurance practices.
  • Ability to conduct and interpret scientific research and data analysis.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience in a food manufacturing environment (internship, part-time, or lab setting) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and quality systems, such as HACCP, GMP, or FSMA.
  • Basic understanding of sensory evaluation and statistical analysis.
