About the position

The Food Service Assistant I position is a vital role within the Daviess County Public Schools, primarily focused on ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the school cafeteria. This position is classified as full-time and is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The Food Service Assistant I will report directly to the Food Service Manager and will be responsible for various tasks that contribute to the health, comfort, and benefit of students during meal times. The role requires a positive attitude towards students and staff, as well as a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and cleanliness in the kitchen environment. The Food Service Assistant I will utilize a computer-based point-of-sale system to manage student meal accounts, ensuring that all transactions are accurately recorded. This includes monitoring student trays to confirm that they meet the requirements for reimbursable meals, while also maintaining confidentiality regarding students participating in free and reduced-price meal programs. The assistant will be expected to operate kitchen equipment, including dishwashers, and report any malfunctions to the manager promptly. Additionally, the role involves portioning and serving food, adhering to health and safety regulations, and following HACCP procedures to ensure food safety. The position also requires participation in special meal functions, such as banquets, which may occur outside of regular working hours. The Food Service Assistant I must demonstrate loyalty and dedication to the goals of the Daviess County Public Schools and engage in ongoing training programs to enhance their skills. Overall, this role is essential for fostering a positive dining experience for students and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Use a computer-based point-of-sale system to adjust account balances, collect money, and enter/confirm counts for reimbursable meals.
  • Understand requirements for reimbursable meals and monitor student trays to ensure compliance.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students participating in free and reduced-price meal programs and HIPAA-related information.
  • Maintain high standards of safety and cleanliness in the kitchen and meet all HACCP requirements.
  • Operate and maintain the dishwasher in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner; report malfunctions to the manager.
  • Keep the Food Service Manager informed of low inventories.
  • Portion and serve food to students and staff while following standard procedures and health regulations.
  • Learn, apply, and explain policies, procedures, rules, and regulations as needed.
  • Report accidents and refer potential safety hazards to the Food Service Manager.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward food nutrition and meet required schedules and timelines.
  • Perform related duties at special meal functions, including some activities outside of normal work hours.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate or satisfactory progress towards a G.E.D.
  • Good general health; capable of heavy lifting.
  • Demonstrate or develop skills in the use and care of commercial food service equipment.
  • Basic computer skills including use of mouse and keyboard, e-mail, and websites.
  • Knowledge of standard kitchen equipment, utensils, and measurements.
  • Understanding of HACCP procedures and sanitation practices related to food handling and serving.
  • Basic math skills and proper lifting techniques.
