About the position

The Food Services Assistant at Philhaven, part of WellSpan Health, is responsible for a variety of routine duties related to food preparation and service, as well as cleanup tasks. This role emphasizes outstanding customer service to patients, staff, and visitors. The assistant will assemble and deliver patient trays, prepare equipment, foods, and beverages, and restock for service in the cafeteria and other retail locations. Additionally, the position involves cleaning up after meals according to established practices and procedures. The Food Services Assistant may also operate a cash register, which includes receiving payments, balancing the cash drawer after each meal, and compiling information for required reports. In this role, the assistant will work on the central tray line, assisting with patient tray setup and preparation. Responsibilities include setting up and serving patient trays according to established schedules and procedures, preparing and transporting food carts, and setting up steam tables and serving lines. The assistant will review menus and prep sheets to assemble food and supplies for daily salad and cold food preparation, as well as prepare salad mixes, sandwiches, and specialty items as directed. The role requires washing and cutting vegetables and fruits, alerting supervisors to equipment and food supply issues, and participating in post-meal cleanup tasks. The Food Services Assistant is expected to maintain established policies and procedures, quality assessment, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Participation in training and educational programs is also required. The assistant will provide excellent customer service, foster teamwork, and practice fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation. The position may involve operating a cash register and assisting with the care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.

Responsibilities

• Works on central tray line and assists with patient tray set up and preparation.
• Sets up and serves patient trays in accordance with established schedule and procedures.
• Prepares, loads, transports, and cleans food carts.
• Prepares and sets up steam table, serving line and menu board.
• Obtains and places dishes, serving utensils, hot and cold foods, baked goods, beverages, desserts, and condiments.
• Reviews menu and prep sheets and assembles food and supplies as needed for daily salad and cold foods preparation.
• Prepares salad mixes and sandwich spreads such as tuna, chicken and egg salad.
• Prepares salad plates and tossed salads by portioning out mixes and adding salad vegetables.
• Prepares sandwiches, subs, wraps, salads and specialty items as directed.
• Prepares hand crafted beverages and specialty drinks as directed.
• Washes and cuts vegetables and fruits according to procedures.
• Alerts supervisor to problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies.
• Carries dishes and foods between kitchen and serving lines and serves food as directed.
• Operates dishwasher or manually washes all dishes and utensils in accordance to established policies and procedures.
• Participates in post-meal cleanup tasks as assigned or directed.
• Collects, processes, and disposes of trash, cans, bottles, and similar debris and transports to disposal area.

Requirements

• Minimum education of less than high school is required.
• Up to 1 month of experience is required.
• Ability to read, write, understand and speak English at a level which enables satisfactory performance of job functions.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and customer service skills.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures.
