About the position

The Food Services Specialist at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for ensuring high-quality culinary standards and efficient food services for both inpatient and outpatient veterans. The role involves working independently under the supervision of the Supervisory Dietitian, making recommendations to improve practices and procedures, and leading culinary initiatives to enhance food service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical and quality expert of culinary standards.
  • Analyze and perform quality improvement tasks for menus and food service arrangements.
  • Identify current culinary industry trends and incorporate state-of-the-art processes, equipment, and programs in food service operations.
  • Provide forecasts of required food items based on understanding of edible portions, yield, and waste factors.
  • Identify culinary and food service developmental and training needs of employees, providing or arranging for necessary training.
  • Perform quality control on plate presentations, recipe compliance, taste quality control, plate waste studies, and overall culinary controls.
  • Serve as lead culinary specialist, researching, advising, training, and educating in the advancement of culinary arts for the service.
  • Develop culinary technical standards for the food service team.
  • Advise on culinary standards related to food service and contract matters.
  • Provide budgetary input on food service subsistence needs and future budgetary requests.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this job.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-09 level in the normal line of progression for the occupation.
  • Education may substitute for experience: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.
  • Combination of education and experience may also qualify.

  • Experience in a healthcare food service environment.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.
