About the position

The Foods Innovation Counselor Educator at Michigan State University Extension plays a crucial role in enhancing local food growth in Southeast Michigan, particularly in Washtenaw County. This position focuses on providing education, consulting, and networking opportunities for farmers and food-makers, helping them navigate various aspects of their businesses, including business planning, food safety, and marketing. The role involves designing and implementing educational programs, conducting one-on-one counseling, and collaborating with community partners to promote local food systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide regional leadership in local food growth in Southeast Michigan, focusing on Washtenaw County.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate research-based educational programs for food and farm businesses.
  • Offer one-on-one counseling on business planning, food safety, product development, licensing, marketing, and distribution.
  • Support marketing efforts for MSU Extension and the MSU Product Center.
  • Participate in planning and implementing MSU Extension annual conferences and events.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programming and outreach efforts through follow-up evaluations with clients and community partners.
  • Develop new partnerships with internal and external community and industry groups.
  • Host workshops, webinars, and training sessions for food and farm businesses.
  • Publish written and media materials that are accessible and inclusive, aligned with CFEI messaging.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as agriculture, food science, or education.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective counseling and collaboration.
  • Knowledge of local food systems and agricultural practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
