The Ohio Attorney General's Office is currently seeking a public minded individual for a Forensic Scientist vacancy in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Section within the DNA unit of the London Laboratory. This position will report to the lab every day. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, known as BCI, is the state's official crime lab serving the criminal justice community and protecting Ohio families. BCI also provides expert criminal investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies upon request. With offices throughout the state, BCI stands ready to respond 24/7 to local law enforcement agencies; needs at no cost to the requesting agency. Staff at BCI work every day to provide the highest level of service. This includes special agents who are on call 24/7 to offer investigative assistance at crime scenes, knowledgeable scientists and forensic specialists using cutting-edge technology to process evidence to bring criminals to justice, and criminal intelligence analysts and identification specialists who help local law enforcement solve cases. Experienced special agents, forensic scientists, and other law enforcement experts' staff BCI's three main divisions: 1) Identifications 2) Investigations and 3) Laboratory.

  • Conduct tests on criminal evidence for DNA analysis (i.e., blood, semen and other body fluids & tissues) under administrative supervision.
  • Collect, assist or advise in collection and preparation of evidence.
  • Use and interpret results from appropriate lab instrumentation.
  • Make conclusions and formulate opinions based on examinations performed.
  • Prepare accurate reports for use by law enforcement officials and courts.
  • Confer with law enforcement officials regarding examinations performed and conclusions reached.
  • Testify in court concerning evidence examined and analyses performed.
  • Formulate and implement training activities.
  • Advise other employees and law enforcement agencies on topics of analysis, court testimony, interpretation of results and reports.
  • Assist or direct investigators with evidence collection.
  • Give lectures to community groups.
  • Keep current with improved or new methods: research and interpret literature on analytical methods.
  • Develop new methods and maintain professional liaisons with colleagues in DNA testing and research.
  • Perform related miscellaneous lab duties.
  • Perform photographic tasks.
  • Maintain equipment and work area.
  • Prepare reagents and other processing chemicals.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree or an advanced degree in a chemical, physical, biology, or forensic science is required.
  • Coursework in Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Statistics/Population Genetics is required.
  • The bachelor's degree and course content must meet the academic requirements of the laboratory's accrediting body.
