About the position

The Forensic Scientist V (FS5) position at Cherokee Nation Integrated Health (CNIH) is a senior role focused on forensic DNA analysis and laboratory management. The FS5 will perform forensic evidence analysis in compliance with laboratory standards and will serve as a technical leader, collaborating with laboratory staff and government stakeholders. This role requires a strong work ethic, exemplary analytical skills, and the ability to manage complex forensic projects while ensuring exceptional results and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical leader and/or expert witness.
  • Manage a forensic laboratory, including technicians and other scientists.
  • Conduct forensic research and be recognized as an expert in the field.
  • Author technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Execute assigned tasks and share findings with the project team.
  • Provide consultation on complex projects.
  • Process and prepare various tissue and fluid samples for DNA extraction and purification.
  • Apply PCR procedures to amplify target template DNA.
  • Separate DNA fragments using various electrophoresis systems.
  • Synthesize oligonucleotide probes and primers using automated DNA synthesizers.
  • Analyze PCR amplified DNA using fluorescent STR technologies.
  • Operate automated/robotic instrumentation for investigative studies.
  • Train in statistics and population genetics for forensic DNA analysis.
  • Interpret DNA typing results and determine statistical relevancy of DNA profile matches.
  • Perform duties in functional areas such as Forensic Science Services, Quality Management, and Laboratory Support Services.

Requirements

  • Recognized expert in forensic DNA analysis with a strong publication record.
  • Minimum Master's degree in a biology, chemistry, or forensic science-related area.
  • Completed 12 semester hours in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics or population genetics.
  • Minimum of three years of forensic DNA laboratory experience at the level of the position being filled.
  • Minimum of three years of human DNA experience as a qualified analyst on forensic samples.
  • 10 years of overall experience in a forensic laboratory with a record of technical achievement.
  • Experience supporting and leading large-scale forensic projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of project management and risk mitigation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and advise large teams.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite and project management software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with forensic toxicology and medico-legal death investigations.
  • Experience in DoD forensic program support.
