About the position

The Forensic Scientist 3 (In-training) position at the Washington State Patrol is crucial for performing timely and accurate analyses of forensic evidence, writing opinion reports, and testifying in court. This role is integral to the agency's mission, particularly in responding to violent crimes and maintaining evidence integrity. The position also involves training and collaboration with various stakeholders in the criminal justice system.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and actively participate in training sessions, asking clarifying questions as needed.
  • Read and comprehend assigned literature to retain necessary information.
  • Complete exercises to learn tasks and prepare for assessments.
  • Discuss training progress with trainers and supervisors, addressing any concerns.
  • Document and maintain records of all training activities.
  • Interpret scientific data and reach conclusions based on observations.
  • Adhere to accreditation criteria and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Follow mandated criteria established by the ANSI National Accreditation Board for forensics (ANAB).
  • Assist in providing training as needed.
  • Participate in assessment preparation and internal audit programs.
  • Engage in continuing education related to Latent evidence and forensic topics.
  • Testify in court, presenting findings clearly to juries.
  • Respond to discovery requests in a timely manner and participate in interviews regarding analyses.

Requirements

  • Valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • Willingness to work on cases involving traumatic events.
  • Bachelor's degree in a natural science, forensic science, or closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Equivalent education/experience may substitute for the education requirement on a case-by-case basis.
