About the position

The Forensic Technician position at the Hernando County Sheriff's Office involves performing technical work related to the development, preservation, and presentation of evidence in criminal investigations. Under the general direction of the Director of Forensic Science, the technician operates with a degree of independence and is responsible for exercising good judgment and initiative in their duties. The role requires working in shifts and involves exposure to biological and chemical hazards while collecting and preserving evidence.

Responsibilities

  • Take photographs of suspects and crime scenes, including industrial accidents.
  • Examine deceased bodies for evidence identification and preservation.
  • Photograph all crime scene evidence involving death, injury, and drug-related incidents.
  • Collect latent fingerprint evidence suitable for examination and court challenges.
  • Mark, package, and seal evidence for laboratory analysis, ensuring proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Fingerprint and photograph individuals as directed.
  • Use the FARO 3D Laser Mapping System for evidence documentation.
  • Construct photo packs for Deputies/Detectives as requested.
  • Prepare file copies for the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Make photocopies of records for distribution to other law enforcement agencies.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in a field related to forensic sciences or equivalent experience.
  • Valid State of Florida driver license.
  • Knowledge of modern criminal investigation methods and criminal identification techniques.
  • Knowledge of methods for preserving and collecting physical evidence.
  • Familiarity with police photography and processing techniques.
  • Understanding of modern fingerprinting and classification procedures.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement regulations and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in criminal investigation.
  • Ability to give qualifying testimony in fingerprint collection and preservation.
  • Proficiency in using computer equipment for data storage and retrieval.
