About the position

The Forest Management Technician position at the J. E. Schroeder Seed Orchard involves assisting in the management and operations of the orchard, focusing on the cultivation and production of seed crops. This is a limited duration position expected to last until December 31, 2026, and offers a chance to contribute to the stewardship of Oregon's forests.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Orchard Operations Specialist in completing annual orchard work.
• Make suggestions for improving practices related to managing orchards and producing seed crops.
• Acquire expertise in new developments and research related to growing orchards and breeding trees.
• Provide management recommendations and perform hands-on work in the orchard.
• Monitor development of cone crops and maintain field notes for analysis of crop yield.
• Alert the Orchard Manager to damaging agents such as adverse weather and insects.
• Work with the Orchard Manager to estimate annual crop yield for budgeting and harvest planning.

Requirements

• Eighteen months of experience in forestry, forest recreation, fire protection, farming, or a related natural resource field OR an Associate Degree in a relevant field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid Driver's License with a clean record, as the position requires operating a state vehicle.
• Oregon Public Applicator's License with herbicide and rodenticide categories to be obtained within six months of hire.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with orchard operations and seed production processes.
