About the position

The Forester position at the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is a full-time, term-limited role based in Weston, West Virginia. This position is a cooperative effort between NWTF and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), focusing on administering and promoting forestry improvements on private lands. The forester will assist in managing forested lands and riparian communities to enhance environmental, economic, and social benefits, while also providing technical and financial assistance to landowners and public agencies.

Responsibilities

• Administer and implement forestry improvements through NRCS technical assistance programs.
• Promote management of privately owned forested lands and riparian communities.
• Provide forestry assistance to private landowners, communities, and public agencies.
• Implement silvicultural practices and deliver technical assistance under NRCS direction.
• Prescribe and monitor silvicultural practices.

Requirements

• 0-1 years of experience in forest ecosystems and riparian communities.
• Knowledge of wild turkeys, forest wildlife, and their habitat requirements.
• Understanding of forest entomology, pathology, and management planning for major silvicultural types.
• Familiarity with NEPA & ESA regulations.
• Working knowledge of basic surveying principles, map reading, and GIS/GPS technology.
• Proficiency in ArcGIS and ability to apply scientific techniques to land management.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
