About the position

The Forestry Communications Coordinator is responsible for leading and coordinating the statewide Forestry Communications Program for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. This role aims to enhance public awareness and engagement in forestry initiatives while advancing internal communication strategies. The position involves developing communication plans, managing media relations, and providing expert consultation to forestry leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead communications, public relations, and outreach initiatives for Forestry, including communication plans.
  • Plan, create, implement, and evaluate unified communications and outreach efforts that broaden awareness of forestry in Minnesota.
  • Lead a strategic approach to outreach and communication materials.
  • Provide expert consultation to Forestry leadership.
  • Develop strategies to define key messages and information needs for key audience segments.
  • Recommend communication strategies, activities, products, and funding to decision makers in DNR.
  • Lead the Forestry Communications Unit, overseeing Outreach Specialists and other team members.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of professional experience in communications, outreach, or public relations.
  • Experience in establishing goals and objectives that guide communications work for a large agency/organization.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and measure the success of communication strategies.
  • Knowledge of current communications tools and techniques for successful outreach campaigns.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for engaging diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to motivate and manage effective teams.
  • Strong skills in meeting facilitation, group processes, and conflict resolution.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in communications, public affairs, or related field.
  • Knowledge of forestry and natural resource science issues in Minnesota.
  • Experience launching a new social media channel for a statewide agency.
