About The Position

The Forestry Intern position at the City of Des Moines is a temporary full-time role focused on assisting in the development and implementation of urban forestry programs. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the City Forester, engaging in various tasks related to tree inventory, public outreach, and support for forestry initiatives over a 120-day assignment.

Requirements

• Completion of one (1) year in an accredited Environmental Science program with coursework in urban forestry, environmental science, dendrology, spatial sciences, plant pathology, entomology, arboriculture, or stormwater.
• Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license.

Nice To Haves

• Preferred experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and ArcGIS.

Responsibilities

• Employ GIS technologies for data collection on public space trees.
• Assist in keeping the city's tree inventory software (Tree Keeper 8) up to date with accurate data and work records.
• Inspect contractor's work related to forestry activities.
• Assist with organizing and preparing public outreach material or educational initiatives.
• Support the Tiny Tree Neighborhood program by watering, mulching, weeding, removing/adding caging, and pruning tiny trees.
• Support forestry staff in watering newly planted trees during drought conditions.
• Interact with constituents or stakeholders to promote forestry stewardship.
• Assist in forestry department metrics.
• Attend planning sessions and meetings to become familiar with principles, practices, and new development related to the urban tree canopy.
• Perform other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
