About the position

The Forestry Technician 1 (Seasonal) position involves performing forestry work on state forest properties and privately owned lands under the guidance of a professional Forester. The role requires physical labor and the ability to work in rough terrain and adverse weather conditions. The technician will gather field data, assist with GIS technology, and support forest management activities.

Responsibilities

  • Gather field data from random plots using hand-held GPS units and electronic data collectors.
  • Input field data into the State Forest Inventory Database.
  • Assist with forest typing and asset mapping using GIS technology.
  • Assist Foresters in marking forest product sales based on written prescriptions.
  • Perform timber volume computations and monitor sales activity for compliance with contract requirements.
  • Perform asset maintenance tasks such as carrying lumber and removing leaves from ditches.
  • Assess stocking levels, forest management activities, and boundary line marking on private forest lands.

Requirements

  • Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, with courses in areas such as botany, dendrology, forest biology, and GIS.
  • One (1) year of technical forestry experience in areas like forest management, nursery management, or forest pest management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with tree identification and measurement.
  • Familiarity with GPS navigation and GIS data manipulation.
