About the position

The Forestry Technician (Smokejumper) position is a temporary role within the Forest Service, primarily focused on fire suppression and parachute jumping. The technician will be part of a fire crew, receiving intensive training in parachute operations and fire management. This role requires physical fitness and the ability to work in remote locations, often under challenging conditions. The technician will engage in various fire suppression activities and may also assist in other resource management tasks when not actively fighting fires.

Responsibilities

  • Perform parachute jumps from aircraft to access remote fire locations.
  • Engage in fire suppression activities using hand and power tools.
  • Receive and complete intensive training in parachute jumping and fire suppression techniques.
  • Direct crew movements in non-jump fire situations as needed.
  • Construct and maintain firelines under various conditions.
  • Care for and maintain tools, equipment, jump gear, and parachutes.
  • Participate in other resource management activities when not engaged in fire suppression.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must meet Federal Wildland Firefighter Medical Standards for arduous duty.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for Wildland Firefighters at the Arduous level.
  • Must be willing to live/work in remote locations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in operating and maintaining suppression equipment.
  • Previous experience on a specialty fire crew (e.g., hotshot, helitack).
  • Knowledge of fire behavior and fire weather conditions.
