About the position

The Forestry Technician position is a temporary role within a National Forest, primarily focused on wildland fire suppression and management. As a member of a fire crew, the technician will engage in various firefighting activities, including operating fire suppression equipment, leading crews, and performing maintenance tasks. The role requires physical fitness and the ability to work in remote locations under challenging conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior firefighter on a handcrew, performing duties such as felling trees and constructing fire lines.
  • Assist in operating fire engines, including starting and adjusting pump engines and laying hoses.
  • Load helicopter cargo and complete manifests for personnel and equipment transport.
  • Construct helispots and attack small fires as part of a helitack crew.
  • Perform structure protection operations in urban interfaces and remote settings.
  • Lead a squad of 3-5 firefighters in suppression duties and training new employees.
  • Conduct inventory of fuel beds and prepare associated reports when not engaged in fire suppression.
  • Participate in prescribed fire efforts and project work, including maintenance of outdoor recreational facilities.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must have a valid state driver's license and may require a commercial driver's license (CDL).
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for Wildland Firefighters at the Arduous level.
  • Successfully completed the Primary NWCG Core Requirement of Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1).
  • Successfully completed the Secondary NWCG Core Requirement of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290).
  • Must meet Federal Wildland Firefighter Medical Standards for arduous duty wildland firefighting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience operating specialized fire suppression equipment such as portable pumps or drip torches.
  • Previous experience in a specialty crew (hotshot, helitack, engines, etc.).
