About the position

The Fraud Analyst position at the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) involves examining Individual Income Tax returns to identify potential fraudulent activities. The role requires a strong understanding of tax laws and regulations, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with taxpayers. The position supports the agency's mission to collect revenue and ensure compliance, contributing to the overall success of the state.

Responsibilities

• Review and process returns on the fraud edit list to identify potential fraudulent returns.
• Correspond with taxpayers and research additional fraudulent leads.
• Make online adjustments to the system to generate fraud assessments and letters.
• Communicate with taxpayers to explain return adjustments.
• Prepare referrals for the SCDOR Criminal Investigations Division, including gathering data and writing reports.
• Receive phone calls from taxpayers and other employees reporting tax issues and research these issues.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree with multiple accounting courses (transcripts required) OR
• A bachelor's degree and one year of experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis OR
• An associate's degree with three years of experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis OR
• Relevant experience or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis with an approved equivalence by the Division of State Human Resources (DSHR).
• Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Nice-to-haves

• 12 semester hours in accounting, audit, or other business-related subjects
• Basic knowledge of South Carolina tax laws, forms, and online computer systems.
