About the position

As a dedicated Fraud Decision Science Analyst-Mid-Level at USAA, you will play a crucial role in providing decision support for various business areas across the enterprise. This position is centered around applying mathematical and statistical techniques, as well as innovative analytical approaches, to derive insights and make actionable recommendations that align with business objectives. Your work will involve gathering, manipulating, and synthesizing data, including attributes, transactions, and behaviors, to formulate strategies that can be implemented effectively. In this role, you will utilize your intermediate and advanced analytical knowledge to engage in discussions with cross-functional teams, understanding their business objectives and influencing solution strategies. You will apply advanced analytical techniques to tackle medium to large-scale business problems, ensuring that your recommendations are backed by solid data analysis. Your ability to translate complex recommendations into clear communication materials will be essential, as you will present your findings to colleagues and management, incorporating visualization techniques to enhance understanding for less technical audiences. You will be responsible for identifying and gathering quality data sources necessary to address the problems at hand, employing exploratory data analysis to ensure comprehensive insights. Additionally, you will document your methodologies and validation processes thoroughly to facilitate peer reviews and compliance. Staying abreast of emerging technologies that can enhance your analytical approaches will be vital, as will your ability to deliver findings in a manner that influences business strategy and decision-making. You will also ensure that risks associated with business activities are effectively identified and managed in accordance with compliance policies.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in discussions with cross-functional teams to understand business objectives and influence solution strategies.
  • Apply advanced analytical techniques to solve medium to large-scale business problems.
  • Translate recommendations into communication materials for peer review and management presentation.
  • Incorporate visualization techniques to support analysis and ease understanding for non-technical audiences.
  • Identify and gather relevant data sources to address business problems through exploratory data analysis.
  • Integrate and transform disparate data sources while applying data hygiene techniques.
  • Document assumptions, methodology, validation, and testing for compliance and peer reviews.
  • Adopt emerging technologies that can enhance scientific methodologies and analytical approaches.
  • Deliver analysis findings in a manner that influences business decisions and strategy.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative analytics field such as Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Operations Research, Data and/or Business Analysis, Data Science, or other quantitative discipline; OR 4 years of related experience in statistics, mathematics, or quantitative analytics may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 4 years of experience in data/analytics or functional business experience within the respective industry (P&C, Bank, Finance) OR an advanced degree in a quantitative analytics field with 2 years' experience in data/analytics.
  • Demonstrates competency in mathematical and statistical techniques for fact-based decision-making.
  • Intermediate and some advanced knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, and SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software.

Nice-to-haves

  • US military experience through military service or as a military spouse/domestic partner.
  • Fraud experience.
  • Experience with a scripting language (VBA, Perl, JavaScript, Python).
  • Bachelor's or Master's in a quantitative discipline.
  • 4+ years' experience in the financial industry, preferably in fraud.
  • 4+ years' experience with Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • 4+ years' experience programming with SQL, including writing complex queries.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a basic understanding of statistics.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
