About the position

The Design Director for Free People Movement is responsible for leading the To/From category, which encompasses elevated athleisure and casual streetwear. This role involves designing seasonal collections, mentoring team members, and ensuring that the designs align with the Free People Movement customer. The Design Director will also forecast fashion trends and respond creatively to business objectives while managing the development and execution of design packages.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of the To/From category for Free People Movement.
  • Mentor and support junior team members in the design process.
  • Participate in designing seasonal collections and communicate original ideas in key meetings.
  • Oversee the creation and execution of brand products that align with the Free People Movement aesthetic.
  • Forecast fashion and cultural trends relevant to the target customer.
  • Attend fittings and assist in resolving fit issues.
  • Support the seasonal development calendar for Retail & Wholesale deliveries.
  • Manage design packages and follow-up communications with the Design Coordinator and Product Development team.
  • Conduct design research and stay updated on industry trends, color directions, and fabric innovations.
  • Execute original design ideas through sketching, draping, and using design software.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design or a closely related field.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in fashion design.
  • Strong understanding of the Free People Movement aesthetic and brand position.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration with merchandising and production teams.
  • Ability to adapt to changing business needs and manage multiple seasons simultaneously.
  • Strong knowledge of garment construction, fabric treatments, and manufacturing processes.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite.
