About the position

The Freight Handler position at FedEx Freight involves the essential function of transporting freight across the dock area to and from trailers for loading. In addition to handling freight, the Freight Handler will secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies such as pallets, straps, and ropes. The role may also require recouping or repairing damaged freight when necessary, ensuring that all freight is in good condition for transport. Completing required documentation and reports is another key responsibility, as is assisting customers with freight and freight documentation as needed. The position may also involve hostling duties, which require moving trailers around the yard, and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies is mandatory. The working conditions for this position include a dock environment where the Freight Handler will be exposed to varied weather conditions, exhaust, fumes, dust, and noise. The hours may vary based on operational needs, and the role is fast-paced and deadline-oriented, requiring frequent contact with service center personnel.

Responsibilities

• Transport freight across dock area to/from trailers for loading to trailers.
• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck.
• Verify documentation matches freight description (e.g., type, weight, hazardous materials).
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies (e.g., pallets, straps, rope).
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Assist customers with freight and freight documentation as needed.
• Perform hostling duties if required.
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, preferred.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Prior experience in warehousing, freight handling and/or fork lift operations preferred.
• If hostler/yard mule duties required, experience preferred.
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight of varying weights several times a week.
• Ability to lift dock plates weighing approximately 100 pounds.
• Ability to open trailer doors requiring approximately 75 pounds of lift force, up to several times per day or more.
• Ability to bend, twist, squat, pushing/pulling freight throughout shift.
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member.
• Previous dock/warehouse experience preferred.
