About the position

As a Site Reliability Engineer - Cloud Operations at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, you will play a pivotal role in the design, implementation, and support of cloud-based information technology solutions. This position is integral to our strategic effort to transform Federal Reserve Financial Services (FRFS) into a national, enterprise-focused organization. You will be responsible for building, maintaining, and operationalizing infrastructure, security services, and system components in commercial or government cloud service providers, ensuring the delivery of highly available and scalable services. The work is advanced and requires minimal supervision, emphasizing the need for a strategic, action-oriented mindset that fosters innovation through experimentation. In this role, you will lead the operational design and maintenance of our AWS cloud-based platform, guiding technical teams on operational best practices. You will spearhead automation efforts to reduce manual tasks and enhance transparency within our secure cloud ecosystem. Collaborating with stakeholders, you will translate requirements into technical implementations and integrate existing legacy systems with proposed solutions. Your expertise will also extend to overseeing continuous delivery and integration frameworks, setting up infrastructure as code, and leading testing efforts to ensure quality and reliability. Your responsibilities will include providing timely technical support across departments, assisting with customer-side monitoring tools, and utilizing monitoring and analytics tools such as Grafana and Dynatrace. This position does not have direct reports, allowing you to focus on technical leadership and operational excellence without the complexities of managing a team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the operational design, maintenance, and operation of AWS cloud-based platform.
  • Provide guidance to technical teams regarding operational, technical, and procedural best practices.
  • Lead automation efforts to minimize manual work and ensure transparency in the secure cloud ecosystem.
  • Translate stakeholder requirements into technical implementations.
  • Integrate existing legacy systems with proposed systems by identifying gaps and leading solution development.
  • Oversee and develop continuous delivery and continuous integration frameworks and tools.
  • Set up framework, processes, and operations for infrastructure as code and automation.
  • Execute detailed tests and analyze testing results with technical and end-user resources.
  • Document and communicate issues, solutions, and timelines to stakeholders.
  • Assist with implementation of customer-side monitoring tools and lead operation outage events.
  • Provide timely technical support and leadership across departments, including rotational on-call support.
  • Support production with expertise in monitoring and analytics tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years working with cloud-based platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.) in an enterprise environment.
  • 7+ years software engineering experience in a team-based environment.
  • Advanced experience integrating legacy platforms with cloud-based systems.
  • Advanced experience with infrastructure as code tools (CloudFormation, Azure Resource Manager, Terraform, etc.).
  • Advanced experience with system configuration tools (Chef, Puppet, Ansible, etc.).
  • Advanced experience with implementing architectural frameworks (Service Oriented Architecture, Domain-Driven Design, etc.).
  • Advanced experience developing solutions in an iterative (Agile) approach.
  • Advanced experience with integrating SaaS providers in a multivendor environment.
  • Advanced experience with source code management tools (Git, SVN, etc.).
  • Advanced experience with CI/build tools.
  • Advanced experience with various programming languages (Java, JavaScript, Python, etc.).
  • Advanced experience with Web Services, API, REST, RPC.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud-based platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of advanced networking concepts.
  • Advanced experience with deploying, managing, operating, and monitoring applications in scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant data centers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with monitoring and analytics tools such as Grafana and Dynatrace.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian suite of products such as Confluence and Jira.
